18 October is a day written in golden letters in the history of Azerbaijan. Today we celebrate the 23rd anniversary of our independence.
The Constitutional Act “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” has been adopted in the historic session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 18 October, 1991. This is an important historical document which put our long-awaited freedom. Thus, a new era began in the history of Azerbaijan.
The nationwide voting took place in the Republic of Azerbaijan on December 29, 1991.
The ballots of this referendum have reflected the only question: “Are you for the Constitutional Act “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan”?
Over 95 percent of voters took part in the referendum and unanimously voted for independence. The people of Azerbaijan have voted for the State independence. Independence of state has been restored with the Constitutional Act “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” on 18 October, 1991. Azerbaijan was declared the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed in 1918-1920 with this Constitutional Act.
The Republic of Azerbaijan, which declared its independence, embarked on its existence in an extremely challenging historical situation. Its independence was recognized by Turkey (November 9, 1991), Romania (December 11, 1991), Pakistan (December 13, 1991), Sweden (December 23, 1991), Iran (December 25, 1991), the U.S. (January 23, 1992) , Russia (April 10, 1992), etc.
Azerbaijan became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992 and the de facto recognition of Azerbaijan by the world community began from that date.
Over the last 23 years of that date, Azerbaijan has increased its international prestige and became one of the fastest growing countries.
