“There is roughness in the relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, like between any neighboring countries, but we can find a common language,” said Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in his interview with the Nezavisimaya Gazeta, APA reports.
The minister noted that Azerbaijan is trying to build a policy basing on its national interests: “If we don’t take into account the statements issued by some mullahs during my visit to Israel, I would not say that we have difficulties with Iran. I have recently had a telephone conversation with the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi. He invited me to a conference in Tehran. Salehi expressed his desire to visit Baku before the presidential elections in Iran. In short, like any neighbors, there is roughness in our relations with Iran, but we can find a common language.”
Touching on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Elmar Mammadyarov called on to triple the efforts to resolve the conflict: “The negotiating table should be cleaned from complexities before the issue on the status is solved. In this case, this is the existence of military factor, use of force, presence of Armenian Armed Forces in Azerbaijan’s territories, presence of socially explosive element, such as refugees and internally displaced persons. Azerbaijan supports enhancing the confidence between the sides. We propose to renew the mutual visits that took place a few years ago with the help of Russia. Two visits were organized. But then Armenia prohibited this. It is a serious measure to build atmosphere of confidence.”
